I am so embarrassed that I used this cliché. Knocking someone unconscious isn't possible without risk of serious neurological damage. Depicting a more effective method is just too difficult to draw.
It is used so often in entertainment media as a lame transition device that we've come to accept it. Unfortunately, I already committed it to my storyline so just know that I apologize :P
