Commissioned services offered include:

  • Commercial pattern garment construction- recommended
  • Using or modifying an existing pattern is the most cost and time effective way of producing your desired garment and can be custom-made to your size. Choose your own pattern and fabric or let me make recommendations for you.

    Browse pattern companies:
Butterick | McCall's | Vogue : each a separate brand in the same company, they have a solid and wide-ranging catalogue. Butterick tends to have simple, clean and classic designs, McCall's has a "younger", trendier selection. For unique, complex and draped items, try Vogue.
Simplicity: easy to navigate, compact selection with trendy and practical designs. The costumes are worth a look!
Burda: limited selection but there are some gems, especially in accessories. Requires a lot more imagination, understanding of technical style drawings

    Terms and Conditions

The following is an outline of the conditions involved if you are looking to commission a custom made garment or costume, whether of your personal design, an existing design (i.e: a pattern or costume reference) or a Cutopia original design.

    1. Measurements and fittings are essential for a custom made garment. The client must be available for at least two sessions- a measurement session and a final fitting- although one or two additional fittings before the final fitting are recommended.
Please note that Cutopia is run from the personal home of Dorothy Yang, based in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Location for these fittings is negotiable, although the Cutopia home studio is preferred.

    2. The client is responsible for all material costs involved in the construction of the commission, the approximate cost of which can be quoted beforehand, but not guaranteed to be exact. The material costs must be paid before the start of commission, and once purchased material costs are non-refundable. A commission fee applies for time and labour, determined by the complexity of the garment. The commission fee will be quoted and agreed on by both parties beforehand and is due upon delivery of the article to the client.

    3. If the client makes changes or additions to the design after the start of the commission, he/she is responsible for any additional material or labour costs incurred. Cutopia will not make any changes or additions that would incur any additional cost without express permission of the client.
